What is PRAN Card?
PRAN stands for Permanent Retirement Account Number. It is a 12 digit unique number issued to each member or subscriber of NPS and valid till the account remains. After successful NPS account is opened, a PRAN card is sent to the subscriber with a PRAN kit. PRAN card contains subscriber’s name, photo, signature or thumb impression and father’s name. PRAN is a proof of your complete information in the central record keeping agency (CRA of NPS). It is very similar to PAN card status but only used by retired people. A copy of PRAN card is also needed to activate Tier II activation and contributions in Tier II.
How to Check NSDL PRAN Status | Status of PRAN Application
Once NPS account is opened and PRAN gets generated, it is sent to registered mobile or email of the subscriber. PRAN is generated automatically once online registration and payment are done to open NPS account. Follow the steps and link to check nsdl PRAN status at the cra-nsdl portal:
- Access the portal using this link: https://www.npscra.nsdl.co.in/
- Move your cursor to the second last option of ‘value added services’ at the bottom and click it.
- You will see multiple options. Give a click on the option ‘Track Status of PRAN for regular NPS.’
- If you are checking newly registered PRAN status, check the button for new registered PRAN.
- Enter PRAN number and/or PPAN number.
- Give a click on ‘submit’ button.
- You will see the status of your PRAN card dispatch on the screen.
Usually, PRAN card is dispatched to the respective nodal offices in 20 days from the date of registration for NPS. You can also track PRAN status manually by contacting your nearest nodal office.

To open an NPS account, you need to fill up the form Annexure S1. The successful submission of form will generate PRAN number. How to Apply for PRAN Card Online
